a day in the life

Stars and Stripes Forever

We're getting ready...! This week it's Americana a-go-go...with a little red, white and blue in a bit of a less traditional fashion. It's been well established that we like our tricked out denim jackets around here and today we've taken our patched jacket and layered on pretty much every red, white or blue (or even blue-ish!) button pin we have. Needless to say we love it. Gonna have to get started on that next size up jacket very soon...

Brooch Corsage

Wrapping up the week the way we started...with accessories. This time our brooch game takes the form of a good old fashioned corsage. Take some time to stop and smell the roses!

for the Littles:

  • American Apparel Sweatshirt
  • similar Ralph Lauren Boys Jean (remember, it's usually best to size down in boys, we cut ours off into shorts and rolled the cuff)
  • similar Gucci Junior Sunglasses
  • pins borrowed from mom, we wear brooches and pins but under extremely high supervision, these are small items that could be a choking hazard or cause lacerations
  • Converse All Star Sneaker

Coming Up Roses

Today's black and floral combo has a little bit different slant. Sure, she hasn't attended a concert, nor does she have a clue what Guns N' Roses is or, for that matter, even that her shirt says 'Guns N' Roses!' But any-hoo, who doesn't love a little nostalgia (even if it is all for your parent's benefit)?

for the Littles:

  • Fabric Flavours Tee (we're wearing a size up and rolled our sleeves all the way up to the armhole seam secured at the top with a small safety pin on the inside of the garment)
  • similar Ralph Lauren Boys Distressed Jean (don't forget to size down in boys, let out the hem, as we did above, or cut off at desired length)
  • similar Gucci Junior Sunglasses
  • Zuzii Sandals

for the Girls:

  • Fabric Flavours Tee (we're wearing a size up and rolled our sleeves all the way up to the armhole seam secured at the top with a small safety pin on the inside of the garment)
  • similar Hudson Kids Cropped Jeans (unroll the cuff and let out hem) or try these Gap Boys Slim Rip and Repair Jeans, these Ralph Lauren Boys Distressed Jeans (size down boys jeans so they are cropped and more appropriate for a girl fit, let out the hem or cut off at desired length) or these Levi's Destructed Legging Jeans (we would cut off the jean for a more cropped length
  • similar Gucci Junior Sunglasses
  • Zuzii Sandals

for the rest of Us:

  • similar Madeworn Rock Tee or Bravado Tank (we sized our tee up for a more oversized fit and rolled our sleeves all the way up to the armhole seam secured at the top with a small safety pin on the inside of the garment)
  • similar Levi's Cut-off Jeans
  • similar Super by Retrosuperfuture Sunglasses or similar Illesteva Black Sunglasses
  • Zuzii Bronze Sandals

Midnight in the Garden

This week we are riffing off of the black grounded floral trend, bringing a little edge and taking florals from sweet to street. Socks seem to be the fresh accessory of the year so there was no better place to start today than this black trimmed floral boys sock. So whuuuut, now boys are stealing the florals from us??? Well we're stealing 'em back guys, we're stealing 'em back!

Ode to Gucci

As promised the dress version. Full disclosure you will likely leave a bit of a trail of glitter behind. BUT... it's not nearly as bad as you would think and, bonus, if you happen to get lost you can Hansel and Gretel you're way home with that trail of glitter! Pret-ty smart, right!

Inspired by these Gucci Dresses: the Black Shift, Pattern Mixed Floral and the rest of the SS16 collection (in particular the skirts from looks #9 and #38).

DIY deets:

  • hand sketched onto the garment with a thin black sharpie first making sure the lines would accommodate the width of the glue bead as well as the extra width of the large flake glitter
  • glittered ribbon fill first with super fine glitter from this Recollections Extra Fine Glitter Pack
  • for the black outline we mixed 3 glitters (approx 1/3 each), Black Glitter, Super Fine Black Iridescent Glitter and a Larger Black Iridescent Glitter
  • glue and glitter in shifts and let dry 4-6 hours in between
  • use a tooth pick to lightly loosen extra glitter along each side of the glue bead 'lines,' this will help make the artwork more clear
  • after 24 hours shake the garment vigorously outside to remove all the excess glitter, we even we even folded the garment back on itself and rubbed glitter against glitter on all sides of the garment to remove as much excess as possible so less will come off during wear
